There’s a delicate line between choosing a strong filter that cleans your air while also allowing airflow through so your unit isn’t straining to bring in air. Air filters have MERV (minimum efficiency reporting value) ratings that estimate the types of particles filtered out of the air.

We recommend a rating that is an eight at a minimum when it comes to improving indoor air quality. But don’t select a filter that’s higher than a 13 on the MERV scale. Filters with higher ratings are woven so tightly that they block airflow and prevent efficient HVAC operation. If you are more concerned about indoor air quality, consider installing a whole-house air purifier.

Change the Filter Out on Time

When you install the filter, use a marker to write the date on the side of the filter so you know exactly when you put it in place. It’s so easy to forget exactly when you replaced the filter and wonder if it’s time for a new one. This simple step helps to eliminate some of the guesswork.

Your next step is to set a reminder so you know when to change it. You can mark the date on a calendar or create a notification in your phone that alerts you when it’s time to make the switch. Changing out the air filter on time helps to boost your indoor air quality while also maximizing airflow.

Rinse the Outdoor Unit

The portion of your HVAC unit that’s outside is exposed to the elements all year long. Extreme temperatures, rain, snow, and everything in between are constantly bombarding the unit. It’s designed to hold up to a lot of things, but you can help protect it from dirt and debris.

Once each month you should rinse the system off with your water hose using gentle water pressure – nothing too strong. Then check for sticks and other things that may have blown into the unit thanks to the wind and remove them if possible. This will keep your heater or AC in Eugene, OR clean and protected from the elements.

Rinse the Condensate Drain Line

It’s also a great idea to pour some vinegar into the condensate drain line of your HVAC unit. ACs, heat pumps, and many heaters have condensate drain lines. If you have a ductless system, each small individual unit has a line that needs to be rinsed. Doing this monthly prevents mold growth and clogs that can lead to water leaks.

Your comfort is our business!
