Obviously, this is a problem. There are a couple of possible explanations for this behavior, which we\u2019ll examine below.<!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Thermostat problems:<\/strong> Whenever you run into any odd behavior from your heat pump, first take a look at the thermostat to see if there\u2019s a mistake with its setting or programming. Sometimes the problem is as simple as that. Or, the thermostat could be broken. A lost connection between the thermostat and the reversing valve (more on this part below) will mean the heat pump won\u2019t be able to change between heating and cooling mode. Only HVAC professionals can repair a broken thermostat.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Broken reversing valve:<\/strong> The main component of a heat pump that permits it to work at both cooling and heating a home is the reversing valve. This mechanical valve controls the direction that refrigerant flows through the system. Should it become stuck or break in any way, the heat pump will remain in one mode. Repair technicians can solve the problem by either fixing or replacing the reversing valve.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Compressor issues:<\/strong> The compressor is the heart of the heat pump, the device that gives energy to the refrigerant to make it circulate. If the compressor becomes stuck or the motor that runs it fails, the heat pump won\u2019t produce either heating or cooling.
