It isn’t unusual to start seeing signs of wear and tear around this time of year, but one problem that is not considered normal is the build-up of ice on any part of your AC. Ice build-up is indicative of an imbalance in the heat release/cooling process, typically caused by one of three issues. Scraping the ice off doesn’t fix the problem, although it may appear that way at first because it provides some temporary relief for your system. To truly remedy the issue, it’s necessary to call your Comfort Flow Heating cooling specialist for repair.

Why Does It Happen?

There are three main reasons why ice builds on an air conditioning system:

One or both of the fans aren’t working correctly – there are two fans in your air conditioning system, and each helps move air through your system. If there isn’t enough air flow due to a faulty fan or fans, the heat release/cooling imbalance will occur.

There’s a refrigerant leak – refrigerant is needed to facilitate the heat transfer in your AC system; in fact, every air conditioner, including yours, is made to operate with a specific, exact amount of refrigerant in order to work properly. When a leak develops, it lowers the amount of refrigerant in the system, causing an imbalance to develop.

The air filter is clogged – it’s recommended that you change the air filter in your AC system every three months because it doesn’t take a lot of time for the filter media to become clogged with dust and dirt. Once an air filter becomes clogged, it restricts the air flow in the system, having the same effect as a broken fan does.

Our pros are available around the clock, so if you need AC repair for your system in Eugene, just give us a call.

It’s still pretty hot here in Eugene and you likely have your air conditioner working around the clock.
